The ABCs of Online Colleges

Online colleges use an enormous array of technologies combined with good, old-fashioned educational know-how in order to facilitate learning for their students. You can expect to find interesting and innovative techniques for proving yourself to your professors, impressing your classmates with your work and working toward a high level of academic success before you graduate.

The Login

Each online college has a system for allowing its students to log in to submit their work and receive their information and communication from professors and classmates. Your grades will be posted there, as well as other information about the school relating to you personally such as your financial aid, tuition receipts, progress reports, etc.

The Instruction

The information you learn in online education can be delivered in a variety of ways. From the mundane; having to read some material in your textbooks and report on it, to the exiting, receiving a video stream of your professor and needing to watch and absorb the information that is taught. Often professors of online colleges will have you visit certain websites to read or explore the information that is there.

The Assignments

When you are assigned work, such as a paper or reading or a collaboration, you may be required to upload it to your school's site, to post a response on a discussion board, or even possibly to e-mail the instructor. Assignments will usually be due by midnight on a specific date, and if you are wise, you will plan to have your assignments in early in the eventuality that the system goes down and you are unable to post it at the due time.

The Testing

Testing in an online environment is more rare than in a traditional classroom, but that doesn't mean you can expect to never be tested. Online tests are accomplished using specialized software that you will log into online, record your answers, (usually multiple choice or short answer), and submit. The tests are usually automatically scored by the computer and the results are reported to your professor for logging into your grade.

All of these features combined, and more, allow for a full and rich educational environment that easily compares to what you would receive in a traditional educational school or university. In recognition of this, governments and employers are widely regarding a degree obtained through online colleges as equal to those received in traditional schools. You should be able to achieve the same levels of success in your chosen field as anyone else.

When the time has come to advance your career you should consider taking classes online. Online study allows you to keep your current job or interests and work through school at your own pace.
